But after 44 minutes of constant Liverpool pressure, it was the same two players which clashed on the edge of the Liverpool box and a foul being awarded to Milan. It was to become a fatidic moment as Pirlo hit the freekick and Inzaghi causing a deflection with his arm beating the Liverpool keeper, Reina, and Milan went in to the halftime break with a 1-0 lead completely against the run of play.
I’m pretty sure that although we were all shell shocked and Milan taking the lead wasn’t really deserved, almost all Liverpool fans were confident that the game wasn’t over and that if any team was able of turning things around that team was Liverpool.
The second half started very much as the first half had been with Liverpool pouring forward and heaping pressure on Milan, but as time passed Milan were more and more comfortable defending and breaking on the counter. Eventually they found some space with the Liverpool defence pushing high up the field, and once again it was Inzaghi who broke free and dribbled the keeper to make it 2-0.
In minute 88 from a corner Liverpool were able to get a goal back from a Dirk Kuijt header and thoughts of Istambul invaded everyones minds. But this time it wasn’t to be, there wasn’t enough time and Milan were able to hang on. All be it said the referee cut short the extra time just in case.
There will always be next year.

I felt Rafa’s tactic was too cautious against Milan! With him playing the wingers, they were missing some height in the striking department, with Crouch starting on the bench.
And why play Zenden? I really don’t think he is good enough to make first team in the finals.
The killer blow really came after Mascherano was substituted, giving Kaka that freedom to spray his killer passes for Izagi to score the crucial second goal to kill off the game.
Well, it’s water under the bridge now. There is always next year. In any case, You’ll Never Walk Alone!
