Today I decided to add something which is quite basic for all blogs, but until now I hadn’t taken the time to get it set up. I registered with Feedburner and added a button to my sidebar so those of you who would like to remain informed can sign up for a full RSS feed. To be honest, RSS feeds arn’t something I use too much at the moment, but as I find more and more blogs I like to keep in touch with, then I can see it becoming quite a useful tool, as it will save me lots of time surfing and changing from blog to blog, as I will be able to find all my favourite daily reads in one place.

Once I had added the Feedburner button, I then had a dilema. Should I add a feedcounter or should I wait a while and get some readers signed up first. It’s quite funny, because as soon as I had got everything as I liked it on my sidebar, I went to problogger to catch up on Daren’s daily postings, and there was a posting asking the same question that I had been deliberating over a few minutes prior to that. To show feedcounter or not to show feedcounter?

As with many decisions there are pro’s and contra’s.

Positive aspects to showing RSS Feed Counter

By showing your feed counter you’re coming clean as to how popular or big your blog community of readers is becoming. It’s also like a fishhook to capture and draw in new readers and keep them coming back. It also gives you an incentive to keep writing as you can see the amount of readers you are reaching daily, encouraging you to keep searching for good quality content. If your numbers are low, then also it’s an incentive everytime you see the number rise.

Negative aspects of showing RSS Feed Counter

If your numbers are low, it can turn readers away as they could automatically assume low feedcount low quality. If your numbers are good then it could cause envy amongst some bloggers, or they could consider you to be arrogant.

Decisions, decisions

At this point I saw things pretty clearly. The positive points were all about making your blog grow through quality, incentivising yourself and your readers and be open about your blogs situation. The negatives were all about other peoples problems and misconceptions. So I decided to add a feedcounter as well, even though it currently shows ZERO. I’ve nothing to be ashamed of, wotZcool is developing nicely as I read, write and learn new techniques and tricks, so there it is on the sidebar sitting pretty and waiting for you all to subscribe.
