Reasons to Write a “Reasons to…” Post
Jun 6th, 2007 by Steve Sandells
Why are we always looking for reasons to justify something? or reasons to discribe our actions? I’m coming across loads of posts on blogs that all post along similar themes like “5 Reasons to Blog Daily” or meme´s with “The 10 Reasons I blog”, some times they even post in instalments. As a Ian Dury and the Blockheads once sung “Reasons to be Cheerful, part3″
These types of posts have become very popular, many of them mutating from “Reasons to Tips” , “Reasons to Phrases” or “Reasons to Steps”.
So, Why all these lists? and What makes them so popular both for writers and readers?
Here are a few “Reasons” I can come up with.
1. Cluttered brains need organisation.
Bloggers in general are creative spirits with an entrepreneurial streak, so if someone can order thoughts and ideas for them then it’s great.
2. Association
By reading a list of reasons or opinions readers like to associate with a train of thought or viewpont. That is very common amongst popular blogs Joh Chow where readers constantly heap praise on anything he writes, in order to have that feeling of being associated with his success.
3. To Differ
In some cases the opposite to point 2 occurs and readers find it necessary to disagree with a “Reason”. This can be very good for a blog as it can generate comments and interaction.
4. Ease of Translation.
Sometimes getting a point of view across can be difficult, and listing your points or reasons makes things a whole lot easier, both for the writer and the reader.
5. Attraction
Very much linked to point 4. A post that is well written and layed out is almost certain to be a hit amongst your readers. It immediatley becomes more attractive to the eye and mind.
There are probably many more reasons, but these are a few I’ve come up with. If you disagree, or can think of more then feel free to mention them.
