May Overview
Jun 1st, 2007 by Steve Sandells
It’s been quite a hectic month both on my blog and off, with lot’s of business and personal obligations during the middle two weeks, which had a direct effect on my daily postings. All in all during May I wrote 21 posts, with a good constant postings towards the months end. For my liking it’s somewhat short of what I was aiming for, and I’ll have to try and work something out for the future so that my posting rate doesn’t drop when my other obligations must take priority. One of the solutions I have thought about is to prepare a series of posts and save them without publishing, so that when I know I won’t have much time, I can post them using the timestamp facility that wordpress offers.
May was also a month I made quite a few changes to my layout, removing the “Adsense” sign up button, and the “Google Search” box. I replaced those with a “PayPerPost” button and a Viralink” button which linked to my Viral Linking post. More about Viral Linking later. As I mentioned yesterday I also set up my Feedburner account and placed a chiclet and stats counter yesterday. I finished the month on zero, but I’ve started June with a fabulous 12 readers showing. Thanks to those of you who have subscribed to wotZcool feed.
During May I also had a serious thought about where I was coming from and where I wanted wotZcool to go. I’ve made quite a few changes about the topics I’m writing about and which are getting an awful lot more comments and interest. Some of the topics I was posting regularly and which had created little interest have more or less been droped, such as my “America’s Cup” naration. Although, I will be giving a small update over the weekend or early next week, due to the fact tomorrow I’ll be out on a yacht following the races live, and will try and upload some photos of the day out.
As I mentioned earlier, I got on the Viralink bandwagon and the response has been amazing. I don’t think that this will have too much effect on Google PR numbers, as Google is monitoring all the different blog link generating schemes and removing the imporatnace of those links. The proof of that is on John Chow’s sudden drop on Google when you search for the keywords “Make Money Online”. Where as at one time he was between 1 and 3 position, he now doesn’t even appear on the first page. The dropout effect of this is that John will no longer be publishing his “Review Batches”.
However, what Viralink has acheived is that over the last week, since I posted my unique visitors have doubled, and my Technorati ranking has passed from Authority level 19 and a ranking of 355.000 to Authority level 84 with a 55.763 ranking. Thats a jump in the ranking of around 300.000. That can only be good for wotZcool’s value as far as advertisers are concerned.
What about revenue generated? A good question. My adsense earnings rose a massive $4.69. It’s funny though that the whole amount was earned during the last week since Viralink started. Not only that, but I also started using the Ad$sense-Deluxe plugin, thanks to Andy Coates for helping me, to help include my adsense ads within my post, thus removing the ads from the sidebar which I wasn’t convinced about there effectiveness.
Blogging is an ongoing learning experience, where you have to be patient, inquisitive, adventurous, sociable and pigheaded if you want to become successful. I can’t wait to write about June, as I’m sure the results will be completely different to Mays’ as I keep learning and tweaking my blog, as well as exploring new avenues of content so as to reach as many readers as possible and search for interesting stories and topics where we can all be involved by linking, commenting and give our opinions.
Have a wonderful June!

Steve,
I’m curious whether you’d be willing to publish your traffic and earnings stats for the month. It’d be interesting to see.

Why not just put a public link to your stats at the bottom of your blog? I do and it allows everyone to see my traffic numbers.
Earnings? I keep that close to the vest. I can’t have my wife finding out!
Oh yeah, what the heck is that smiley face on the bottom of your blog from?
Steve, Thanks for the idea about the stats link, I’ll look into it. ABout the smiley, I don’t know why it shows, it is part of the worpress stats plugin.
