Louis Vuitton Cup - Standings After Round Robin 1
Apr 29th, 2007 by Steve Sandells
After plenty of days without sailing the first Round Robin came to an end in dramatic style. The USA BMW ORACLE Racing team was finally beaten by the spanish Desafio team, but looks like they are gonna be the team to beat having only lost that one race. The second round robin got underway today but only 3 of the races were able to take place with the remaining 2 races reprogrammed for tomorrow weather permitting.
The current standings show the BMW team as leader closely followed by Luna Rossa which both look almost certain to make it to the semi-finals. The last two places will be heavily fought between Emirates Team New Zealand, Desafio Español 2007, Victory Challenge and to a lesser extent the Mascalzone Latino boat.
The next 10 days or so will be make or break time for these teams. It will be when they either make things happen and reach their full capacity as sailing teams or will be when they realise that team fundings of 30 million $ or more have lead to nothing in sporting terms, although as far as the sponsors are concerned the high media exposure is probably more than justifiable.
Here are the current standings:
