El Perro Verde 2005 - D.O. Rueda
Apr 12th, 2007 by Steve Sandells
Strange name for a wine which leaves your imagination open to almost anything before you first taste it. This wine “El Perro Verde 2005″ literally translated means The Green Dog comes from the region of Castilla y Leon in the north of Spain and is botelled under the Denomination of Origen “Rueda”. As all wines from rueda made exclusively from the Verdejo varietal.
Today I was eating at that restaurant I mentioned hidden in the sand dunes near to Valencia and after 3 unsuccesful attempts to order a good white the waitress offered El Perro Verde. I think after last weeks America’s Cup they had been left with their wine stocks really low. Before she offered she did say that we shouldn’t be put off by the name, so Perro verde it was to be.
Now, back to the wine and lets forget the name. As a white, with around 13º alcohol it’s best to be drunk chilled at around 10ºc. It’s an intense yellowish gold colour with a nice floral aroma which as it opens up leaves traces of laurel and balsamic sensations. Taste wise it has a fresh feeling which reminds you of tropical fruits. All in all a nice experience.
I would more than be pleased to recommend this wine, offer it to a friend or even buy a few bottles for home consumption. An excellent white wine typical of Rueda, good value for money at around 10$ in stores and 18$ in a restaurante. Ideal to accompany seafood and rice. I had some grilled Norwegian Lobster (Scampi) with mine before a nice paella. Sorry I forgot to take a photo of the rice.
