Does John Chow Help You Make Money Online Or Take Your Money Online?
May 22nd, 2007 by Steve Sandells
I was never under any illusion that within a few months I’d be making the same money that John Chow makes. Firstly I was a novice and had to start from scratch learning the basics where as John is an internet expert with various onine businesses and many years of experience and knowledge.
John preaches the “Link Love” gospel, offering free links from his blog to your site if you write a review. This was my first deception regarding John. I wrote a review back on April 30th fulfilling his requirements of links to his home page and anchor text “Make Money Online” linking to his latest review batch where I wanted to put John Link Back offer to the test and would report on the effect a link in one of his review batches would have on my traffic. Since then John has posted 9 batches of review links and he’s never posted wotzcool’s link. I have posted comments on most of the batches since then claiming my review and link, but unfortunately never received an answer. I also contacted John through his Contact Me page, but again, nothing, no answer and no review batch link.
So much for the “Link Love” gospel.
Where as Johns income is climbing quickly, the quality of his postings seemed to have dropped. Not only that, but there has become a fervour amongst some of his readers to reach the “Top Comentators” list by spamming the comments sections. For my liking this ruins an essential part of what was one of John’s main attractions, the chance for readers to express their views or concerns and for John and others to answer.
John had a “No Follow” policy which meant that non of the comments got you a link to your page, so they were useless as far a technorati ratings or google was concerned. That was one of the reasons the “Comment Spammers” appeared as they realised that being a “Top Commentator” got them a link from the Sidebar listing.
John has just changed his “No Follow” policy to a “Do Follow if you payme ” policy. Another “evil” plan as he quite happily calls it. He will quite happily remove the “No Follow” tag on a user during a month for a 10$ fee to be paid by PayPal. I’m pretty sure most of the spammers are gonna take it up, that way for each post they make they get a link. I have seen the top position with over one hundred posts in a five day period. The current top comentator is “Cheap Custom Content” with 65 posts followed by Monetize Your Blog with 53 comments, so maybe they won’t have to spam comment so much from now, but they’ll be paying John for the priviledge of spamming less but with linkbacks.
It’s funny to read John’s own view of this. They are his readers, they bring him money and from now on will not only generate money through traffic and clicks but also pay him to “Premium Spam” .

Maybe it’s time for John Chow readers and spammers to “Get a Life”, I certainly have almost stopped reading Johns ramblings as I’ve come to the opinion that all he is out for his to take your money online, not show others how to make money online.
There are plenty of other blogs with lots of information, tips and advice to help make your blog more successful and help turn it into a money generator, so from now on I’ll be spending more time reading blogs like Jane May Blogs, Problogger or Kumiko’s Cash Quest to name a but a few.
If You Like wotZcool, I'd Be Happy To Drink Another "Bud" To Your Health... Thanks

What ever happened to good old-fashioned posting where you get more readers when your content is good? What Chow is doing seems absolutely ridiculous to me, especially the paying to comment part. He isn’t fostering communication - he’s turning his site into a useless billboard. Thanks for the heads up on “bloggers” who aren’t in the community for content, but for much less noble reasons.
Yes Renee I agree. I’ve quickly become to realise whats happening and how he’s created a bunch of “John Chow Blog Junkies” who follow his every whim and whittering very much as if all he writes is sacred scriptures. But the real end to everything is to draw people in, keep their attention and make money from them, either indirectly through ad clicking or directly by charging to comment.
I’ll be happy to have you at Jane May Blogs! Anything I can help with, I’ll try to answer…if I don’t know, I’ll find the answer
Thanks for the mention!
I have to agree. John has become one of the whores he often talks about. Ha.
Plenty of unrelated stuff posted lately on Johnchow.com especially review me post. To me it is a popular blog but not a quality blog. The blog is not very helpful in teaching people make money online.
